Eligibility

The Institute is designed for mid- to senior-level student affairs professionals who demonstrate readiness for and commitment to pursuing a Vice President for Student Affairs or Dean of Students role within the next 3-5 years. Applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Currently employed at a SUNY institution (all 64 campuses eligible, including comprehensive colleges, community colleges, university centers, and specialized colleges)
  • Hold a master's degree or terminal degree in higher education, student affairs, counseling, or a related field (doctoral degree preferred but not required)
  • At least five years of progressively responsible experience in student affairs, with current position at the level of Director, Assistant/Associate Vice President, or equivalent
  • Demonstrated leadership in at least two of the following areas: supervision of professional staff, budget management ($500,000+), strategic planning, divisional assessment, policy development, crisis response, or Title IX/compliance
  • Strong endorsement from current supervisor (typically the VPSA or Provost)
  • Commitment to full participation in all program components (approximately 80–100 hours over 10 months)

Selection Criteria

Applications will be reviewed by a selection committee of SUNY Chief Student Affairs Officers. Selection will be based on:

  • Clarity of career goals and readiness for a VPSA role
  • Depth and breadth of student affairs experience, including supervisory responsibility and portfolio complexity
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and student success
  • Leadership potential as evidenced by examples of strategic thinking, collaboration, and institutional impact
  • Quality of reflection and self-awareness in application responses
  • Strength of supervisor endorsement
  • Diversity of the cohort across institution types (comprehensive colleges, community colleges, university centers), functional areas, geographic regions, and identities

The selection committee will prioritize building a cohort of approximately 15–20 participants that reflects the diversity of SUNY campuses and the range of pathways into senior student affairs leadership.
